Warning

I always use a variation of my real name when I enter comps - most of which are already posted on the main board by the time I find them - for example DAVE instead of DAVIS and I have been getting messages over the past few days sent to DAVE saying there has been an unauthorized login attempt to certain banks and enclosing a link to login to the bank.

Now, because of what I have written above I KNOW that all these messages are SCAM attempts and attempted fraud and I DO NOT click on any such link received - all such messages are deleted.

Someone - I don't know who or from what comp I have entered - has used my details obtained from a comp I have entered to send me these messages.

These messages not only tell me about my own bank but also accounts I do not have with other banks.

IF YOU GET ANY MESSAGE SUCH AS I HAVE DESCRIBED DO NOT CLICK ON ANY LINK JUST DELETE IT AND IF YOU CAN THEN PERMANENTLY DELETE IT.

This now makes me extremely reluctant to enter comps and makes me think twice about posting any comp which I have found and is not already posted in case the same thing happens to other compers.

The emails that you receive about your own bank, are they similar to those that you get about the others? Are they trying to suggest that they are from that bank and asking for info?

If that is the case, I doubt v much that they have your bank details, just your email and by sending emails as if from the major banks, chances are one of them (at least) would be correct.. If they are coming in this way, as if from the bank, of you go to the bank in question's main website and search for phishing, they are likely to have an email address to forward such mail to.

I just had a text message asking me to click on a link to my HSBC account as there has been suspicious activity.

Certainly is suspicious ! I don't have a HSBC account
  • They don't have your details. Its just spam trying to get you to give them. These sort of emails have been going on for years

Also a warning for some comps if you do not use your real name and they request identity you won't get the prize. I don't understand why you wouldn't use your real name to enter competitions.

When you enter comps there is always a risk that somebody will sell on email lists. Its the risk you take I'm afraid. Could have come from anywhere. There is no danger if you don't click on the link. If you check spam you will find you have gotten many over the years like this that aren't connected to comp entries at all.

I got this also (and I don't bank with them). I looked on the HSBC help Twitter account and they have replied to lots of people asking about this as they have received the same text message as me (people have posted screen shots). HSBC have said they are aware and looking in to it.
  • Just checked my Batphone and surprise surprise I also have a text from HSBC (which I don't bank with). Now, they have used the shorter version of my name which I only use for certain comp sites from this year only, only thing is it's still a lot of sites so difficult to pin it to any in particular. However the only one that has always had me worried is Quizonaut as when you win they want to know everything about you before they send you that precious mouse mat. The company that they use, Giftcable, seems to have quite a low trust rating, I may be wrong but it's just a hunch.

Yes I've had them too. It was to my maiden name though and I've been married for 5 years so I think it must be some really old data.

    Not just me, then.

As I said, these messages come to me using my comp name, NOT my real name - I ONLY use the comp name for entering comps and for nothing else - and this is why I suspect that someone is using details from a comp I have at some time entered.
