Creating a half glass half brick wall partition?

Options
Hi all,

we are trying to come up with a design for the wall between our living room and kitchen. It is currently still as we bought it in the photo below. Our thinking is to half brick from the floor, and then replace with new glass for the top half. Does anyone know roughly how much we are looking at to do this? And where the best place to source the glass is?

I dont know if clear glass, or frosted is best. Any recommendations will be well received?

On a side note, house is currently empty with no flooring due to flood so disruption isnt an issue :)

No need to brick it up. Just use a stuf wall construction with plasterboard either side. For glass try a glass merchants.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
  • Have you considered glass blocks rather than just glass? There are some good diy kits available if that's your sort of thing. Blocks will be a bit more substantial as well

    And very 80s. :o
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • Matter of opinion I guess. Best bet to google some images as if done well they can look really good. They do seem to be a bit continental and not that common in the uk. Pretty sure I could make a glass block wall in that room look better than just using a sheet of glass.
  • funny you asked that, we were looking at glass blocks yesterday and think we are going to go for it. We were thinking along the lines of glass blocking the left and right part as it is now and then leaving the middle plaster boarded up. Any thoughts?

I will try and post a sketch up of the idea later.
  • This is a rough sketch of the latest plan.

Sort of like this but without the one in the middle and more squashed together:

  • I think something like that would look good, or just go for all three with glass blocks if it's wide enough.

Either option I think would look better, more interesting, more sound proofed and safer than just the glass. Just bear in mind you might need to allow some tolerance regarding spacing in between the blocks. I measured up and ended up a few mm too high I think for the space once I'd built it up to the top row. Wasn't such an issue as mine went up to the ceiling so I just chiseled into the ceiling plaster to make them fit. I guess you could do the same if you are building them into a wooden frame. I got the kit with the plastic spacers and you glue it all together, and then grout over it. It's a better finish than the in-laws who had theirs professionally built with the cement and steel rods, and quite quick to do.

Could you look at internal bifold doors ?

You could use glass or infill panels or timber looks good but might be expensive .

I think were it my place I would want to option of being able to open the room up sometimes.

    Just an extra idea though
