Faulty Car part - Claim for hire car missed holiday

Yeah, sunny Essex!
I know it may not have been the best thing for the car but I didn't have it too long before the compressor went, so put it down to wear and tear and didn't bother getting it replaced.
My fuel was all paid for from work, I suppose if I was paying myself I would've treated it differently.0 -

Modern A/C systems don't affect fuel consumption as much as you might think. I always have A/C on as it helps even in winter to dry the air and improves demisting. Not using A/C for long periods can be a bigger problem, as the seals dry out and then leaks can occur.Moneyineptitude wrote: »Leaving aside the obvious wear and tear, that's very expensive in fuel use. However the pulley on the compressor should be freewheeling until the compressor clutch is engaged. So a seized compressor shouldn't affect anything as long as the A/C isn't turned on.shaun_from_Africa wrote: »This is because the airconditioner compressor doesn't normally have its own dedicated drive belt and if the compressor was to seize up then the accessory belt could well fail as it would be running over a non moving pulley.
So the car should be perfectly drivable.0 -
The original compressor had not been working for over 12 months with no problems to the car (zafia 07). The new compressor failed completely and it didn't matter if the air con was on or not it was not driveable and 2 mechanics said it would have caused serious damage.0

Surely you would just turn off the air con and open the windows if needed?
My current car has working air con but the last two didn't as it wasn't worth the cost on second hand cars of their age to get the work done. It didn't affect the rest of the car at all though.
Also if you have travel insurance they may cover the cost of the hire car but probably not if it was an unnecessary cost due to the car still being perfectly drivable just one of the comfort features not working.
Do you think I would be posting this if it was just the air con not working? As I said the RAC had to tow the car.0 -
I have told you!
What were the symptoms? Did it just stop in the middle of the road, did it judder, did it make noises? Just waying 'the air compressor broke' means diddly squat.
Goodness, it's like pulling teethAccept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
