Esure cancellation farce

Hello,
On 26th August I rang Esure to cancel my car insurance with them. The guy on the phone said that if I paid £48.35 then I could cancel it with that months insurance. I paid it over the phone and specifically said asked if that would be the final payment and he said yes, he did mention that I would probably receive a letter saying that I had an outstanding balance but not to worry about it because I had paid there and then (the next lot of insurance was due on the 27th August but apparently they apply for the money 3 days before the payment date).
2nd September I received the letter about an outstanding payment and promptly ignored it as I was told. Yet today I received a letter and an email about the outstanding payment. I called them straight away and inquired as to why I had received these only to be told by the girl on the phone that I still owed £28.57.
I asked them to listen to the previous phone call recording as this was not stated to me and she said they would do that and I should received a call tomorrow about it from a manager.
Where do I stand if they turn around and say that I still owe them money even though the recording will prove that I was misinformed? I cancelled before the next payment date, surely I shouldn't be charged for it?
Yes yes I know Esure have got skewed reveiws but as usual they were dirt cheap and lured me in.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
William.

An error does not give you entitlement not to pay. Although for the amount involved, you would typically expect them to waive it if the conflicting information is verified in the call recording.
Wait and see what they say.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. I will wait and see. Can I ask for a copy of the recording? What I am more irked about is the fact that I asked on the phone on the 26th if there was anything else left to pay and he said no only for this to come around and rear its ugly head. And the fact that the text message received said they'd hand it to a debt collection agency if its not paid.0

You will likely have to pay £10 for a copy of the recording - is that worth it given that the amount allegedly owed is only £28.57?
The text message is likely automated.0
