My renewal is due on my liability insurance and I don’t have the time to sit trawling through all the sites, so I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations.
I’m a self employed in property maintenance with a current risk of 2 million for my liability and £1000 for any tool equipment and tend to do only work in domestic properties.
I paid £260 last year and its gone up each year and its now at £310 my current insurer won’t do anything with the price as I haven’t found anything cheaper yet.
Can anyone help?

I had the same issue with my insurer a few months back who I was with for a number of years... NO LOYALTY! It just so happened my insurance for my van was due for a renewal with One Call Insurance ... it turns out they offered liability insurance and got a good deal having both policies with them. I would recommend never had any issues and for the level of cover the price was right.:beer:0

Maybe you have been lucky - or never needed them???Blacky1990 wrote: »I would recommend never had any issues and for the level of cover the price was right....
See the shocking reviews across the net a well as here
eg see this long running thread:

I see what you mean this is something I always check out using anyone but to my surprise when checking the review center which is really good for checking company reviews they are actually one of the top 5 uk brokers and the amount of good reviews compared to bad reviews is a big difference. Same as anything insurance isn't a favorable industry but that thread started some years ago and alot of the comments seems basic issues that you get with all companies, mainly high charges etc. Ive never had an issue so hopefully I wont, I recommended my mother to them and she had an accident but seemed fine, had a car the next day and repairs were ok.0

When you say Property Maintainence, I assume you are in effect a Handy Man.
Liability for Handy Men tends to be relatively expensive because of the potential claims from water (Plumbing work) and claims from fire (Plumbing or Roofing Work).
If you're not actually a Handy man and only do a specific trade, you may well find it cheaper to limit your insurance to that trade, providing that's all you do.
In additiom, I recommend you look at what the tool cover actually covers as you may be surprised at the restrictions eg no cover for theft from your van overnight0 -
I managed to get a quote with One Call online £186! I rang them to make sure it covers everything I needed just in case. When speaking to them they had a specific trade to what I do, I maintain property for various estate agents/landlords etc and went through all the details and covered my tools too. I believe it is covered in my van as long as it is locked etc however I already have tools cover with my van insurance for when they are in the van so this is not an issue.
£186 for 2million liability and £1000 for tools. I also asked about van insurance with them and for when my renewal is due they said they can offer me a discount and going to call me closer to the time for a quote. Fingers crossed should also be a decent price.
Thanks for your help guys easier than I though saved me a great deal of searching!0 -

Please check both of your tool covers at it is very very likely that they are not covered at night time (When they are most likely to be stolen) unless the van is in a locked garage.
I've seen so many people be burned by this exclusion and it's makes life very difficult for tradesmen as they cannot work without their tools0 -

This is the extract from my policy booklet in relation to theft of tools
"Damage to Tools caused by theft or
attempted theft if it is left unattended
unless it is contained in a securely locked
motor vehicle or room or box and
there is evidence of forcible or violent entry
to or exit from the motor vehicle trailer or
room or box"
That seems to me they are covered in my van as long as its securely locked.
This popped under the goods in transit section in the policy wording about theft
"Damage caused by theft or attempted
theft from any unattended vehicle unless
(a) the vehicle is securely locked at all
points of access
(b) between the hours of 9pm and 6am
the vehicle is kept within a securely
locked building"0 -
If the secound clause relates to the tools then there is no cover at night unless the vehicle is in a locked building at the time of the theft0
 -
The 2nd one is in relation to goods in transit its under a separate endorsement in the policy wording to tool cover.0

I've recently bought a policy for my new catering business with One Call. £2mil public liability and only cost me 59 quid really good price and the level of cover is decent0
