IGT charge
I only found out that I'm an IGT(independant gas transporter i think it stands for) customer as my gas isn't supplied by a major company, when i changed from Npower to Scottish Power. I wasn't charged an IGT fee with Npower but now i got charged 42 quid from Scottish Power because of this. On top of it it says "annual premium of 42 pounds a year", I'm guessing i'll be charged this sum each year?

Yes you will be.
I have just joined NPower and been told it's an extra £31.
You have 2 choices.
1) Go with the cheapest supplier and accept it.
For example I'm saving £240 but having to pay £31. It's still a good deal isn't it.
2) Search for companies that don't charge this (Ebico don't for example).
The problem is that these companies may be more expensive.
What you really need to do is find the cheapest bearing in mind the IGT costs.
Personally I wouldn't bother switching for £30 or £40 anyway, so basically you need to find savings that are larger than this before you swap.
It can be difficult to find out about these charges in advance, so rule of thumb is add another £30-£40 on to cover it.0 -
What i don't get is, why didn't Npower charge me this, is it because they are the main suppliers and Scottish power aren't?
Anyway i still save 300 pounds odd a year with the IGT charge.0 -
NPower swallowed the extra costs, probably inflated the costs to cover the higher charge there may be with some customers.
It's annoying when new built homes don't use Transco (as they were called) for connecting up the homes but going for a cheaper company, means you end up paying every year the higher costs of your gas going through their network for the final few metres.
Maybe if people were warned before hand whether the home was connected by Transco or another transporter, people would be able to make a decision whether to move to that property or not. Maybe house builders who do use Transco could advertise the fact they do, so you won't be hit with higher fees each year. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
BG don't charge extra, and I don't think Southern does these days either. If you have a scoot through the faq's on the energywatch website, they do have a list of the providers and charges somewhere.0

Atlantic don't charge extra either and they were the cheapest in our area without us being IGT.Too many children, too little time!!!0

EDF don't charge extra for IGT customers, provided you take a dual fuel contract. They only charge extra if you only have gas with them.0

Hi - this isn't true. I am just in the middle of switching to Atlantic and they have informed me that they do indeed levy an IGT charge. Perhaps it depends on which tariff you choose?

When we joined in February we were told they did not charge extra. They have not informed us of any changes so looks like we'll be moving supplier if this is the case.

Rang this morning, was told we were not being charged, woman had someone else check as well. Also checked our bills, not being charged any more than standard internet rates. Phew!Too many children, too little time!!!0 -
That's odd, perhaps it's something they're only levying on new customers from a certain date or something. I'm going to check with them tomorrow and will post any updates on here in any case.0
