  • The rice worked! I needed to heat it up a little -I used a different pan to the soup and it's thinner so the heat escaped quicker.

  • Well it seems to work on gas too :) My soup was lovely. The parsnip could have been a little better but it was a whole parsnip. Everything else was sliced :)
I'm going to try it with the rice later :)

I'm pleased, will have to try more myself now
  • It works with noodles too....

Can I ask how long you leave the eggs after bringing to the boil? I'm wondering if they would be hard or soft boiled? Thanks.

In which case all you need to do is take the pan off the hob, stand it on a folded towel, and cover it with another folded towel or two. Anything to keep the heat in. Works a treat and costs nowt :)

I leave mine for 10 mins and they are hard boiled. So maybe about 6 mins?

I've never tried it with anything except eggs though. If i did it with rice, I'd save a fortune!

You could wrap it in a blanket/sleeping bag; this is how we cooked with just one pit while camping.

  • +1 for a real wool blanket which can cope far better with hot things than a possibly mixed fibre or pure polyester sleeping bag which might respond badly to a hot pan. Failing that four of five of the free papers, wrapped round & held with string. Looks a bit eccentric, but it's warm & it works with rice.

Fleece is great stuff, just *not* by a fire.

Thanks I'll try that. I usually boil them for 10 minutes so that's 10 minutes of gas saved about 3 times a week :):T

  • Does anyone know if this works with whole grain rice? That usually takes longer than white rice to cook, about 25-30 minutes?
