What's the best way of cancelling a holiday without losing £500 deposit pls?

We booked a holiday for New Year and now find that we've overstreched ourselves and won't be able to afford to go. The balance of £2,000 is due on 1 November but I just wondered if anyone knew the best way of me not losing my deposit of £500 if I cancel. If pushed I would move it to another holiday with the same company, sometime next year maybe, but are they (Thomsons) then going to charge me something ridiculous like an additional £200 in costs for moving to another holiday?

Any advice gratefully received.

TIA

You don't say how many people the holiday is for -amendment charges are usually per person. It used to be that you could switch seasons (in your case Winter 2007/8 to Summer 08) with only an amendment charge but now some of the larger companies do charge you more if you change season and regard it as a cancelation so loss of deposit. Best thing is to check with Thomson direct or read the booking conditions in the brochure as they will clearly show what you committed to.

ring customer services asap- you should be able to transfer this holiday to one at a later date- ( a later season too) for no charge if it is 8 weeks or more to your depature date once you get to 8 weeks you will lose the deposit
  • Thank you Duchy and Deva - I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and phone them. We are a family of 4 so I was reckoning on £50pp charges for changes.
