First car I bought in 1965 was a 1931 Austin 7, cost £12, sold it a year later for £15 and bought a 1956 mk1 consul for £16 at the motor auction, bald tyres and one mcpherson strut was gone, guy at work had a mk1 zepher in his garden bought the strut from him and fitted it, used it for a year sold for £15 and bought a ford van that had windows and seats fitted cost £25, the gearbox was poor so bought one from a scrap yard and fitted it but it was duff so took both apart and made a good one out of the two.
You could make and mend in those days and buy 4 gallons of ICI petrol for £1.
As I earned more I bought newer and more expensive and stopped doing work on them, now retired I am driving my 10 year old car and have done 40,000 miles in the 18 months I have had it, fitted a new thermostat myself and will try to keep it going as long as possible as not going to have funds for another unless I could find a one at those 1960's prices.0
