Checklist

Hi all,

I'm exchanging on Friday..were in the main mostly packed and main things sorted. Just need to arrange gas and electricity supplier and have no idea how to go about it. Most ask for current providers but we have no idea who they are and on ringing the helplines...both are either closed or experiencing a high call volume due to adverse weather.

Am I doing the right thing or is there a different way to go about arranging energy supplier for first time buyers?

Also is there a simple checklist that we can follow, I've looked around but most are mind boggling and right now I'm juggling returning to work after the 6 week hols and finally being told we can move after 19 months

Many Thanks all

Initially I think you need to go with the current suppliers, (take the mete reading as soon as you get there) then swap once you're in.
Can't you ask the current occupants who they are with?
Alternatively, you can check once you're in - see link below.

Checklist in respect of what? Try this.

Other comparison sites are available. :)

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Your solicitor should have provided you forms which the vendor completed stating who the elec and gas and water and TV provider is with and where the stopcock is.
  • Slight correction - you are hoping to exchange on Friday. Not being overly pessimistic but with another 6 days to go, anything can and sometimes does, happen.

Unless of course, you are exchanging and completing on the same day.

I also agree that you should wait until you've moved in before worrying about gas and electric suppliers.

    Hi all. Thanks so far.

No current occupier, unfortunately she passed away. When the executor of her will filled out the forms, he didn't name the suppliers, we can ask though, which we will of course.

And yes we will be completing on Friday...my mistake. We've waited soooo long for this, my head is in a bit of a spin.

I'm going to take photographs of the meters on Friday, that way if I write it down...it doesn't give me the opportunity to lose the bit of paper...I'm so clumsy!

Is there currently a supply? If the property is empty there may be no gas, electric, phone etc

Read here to identify the current utility suppliers.

There are many online sites giving 'to do' lists. Use your favourite search engine or see:

In the week between exchange and completion we called British Gas saying we wanted to use them as our provider, we had no idea who the gas and electric providers were and the vendor didn't know either as his tenant had changed suppliers. BG told us within a few minutes who the providers were for each, they weren't the same.

Then we just called them both up, got temporary accounts set up whereby we had to call them back on completion day with meter readings. Now we can start looking into the best providers for us and change over.
  • You have probably already done this - but have you redirected post? I always give it a year - I am terrified if identity theft!

Oh and remember to introduce yourself to the new neighbours! I got new ones two weeks ago. I have nipped round with a house warming present and they still don't even smile or wave!!

Thanks again all. very useful information....it certainly is overwhelming moving house.

Michelle, luckily we have the keys for the house as it's through family we are buying, so we have done lots too it already, like a thorough clean..and also introduced ourselves to the neighbours. The adjoining semi is vacant...there is a sad story attached. The neighbours on the other side are a retired couple, but lovely. We have some fruit in our back garden, and she makes jam, so we have said she is more than welcome to take what she needs...in exchange for a jar of her delicious jam :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
