Any advice from you knowledgeable lot regarding getting a locking wheel nut removed without the key?
My research suggests the nut is either a Mcgard one or original Ford and is a two piece unit with a spinny collar thing behind it.
I think there is a method of welding a nut to it but this can damage the alloy

Thanks as always

  • Contact some local garages and see if they have the tools - removal tool that bores into the centre of the nut.

A main dealer, AA or RAC would be able to but would probably charge a lot more.

The welding could end up a right mess of it goes wrong and then you'd have no option but to have the whole thing ground out which is time consuming so costs more and will end up damaging the face of the wheel.

I think locking wheel nuts are probably more trouble than they're worth these days. Since alloys aren't luxury items anymore - they're fitted to all but the most poverty spec of cars.

  • We do a lot of of these for our local tyre depots, it usually involves welding a bolt on. If you get a decent guy on the job the alloys will be fine.
  • If it is a McGard one you can send them a pic and they will send you a key for about 15 euros IIRC.

Just angle-grind the nut off; or some flats on it and use a spanner. Be careful not to damage the threads of the hub stud.

Angle grinder from Aldi is £20 if you don't have one:

Angle grinder? You can get proper removal sockets for under £30. No risk and no damage.

Or pop along to a proper tyre shop and they will remove them for a drink.

Agree with ForgotTheirName above, but do look in the boot/around the spare tyre first, surely no one would put the thing anywhere but in the glove compartment or boot, or else how are you going to get the wheel of when you get a flat tyre.....?
  • Have you got the handbook that came with the car? I broke my McGard locking wheel nut key & in the handbook was a card with the code. Ordered from Germany for €15 & arrived within the week.

The Honda dealership removed the locknuts from my parents jazz for free, stopped by the house (on the way to/from another job) to do it too. You could do worse than asking a main dealer if they could help you out if you dropped in, it's a quick job and they may want you to look favourably on them for your next car...

Considering most nuts sit inside the alloy to some agree how do you plan on getting an angle grinder in there
