Money Moral Dilemma: Should I abandon my local garage for a cheaper MOT?

Having an MOT done by a qualified, reliable and honest mechanic is not easy. The mechanic you've chosen for the past seven years seems to be fine,so why change?Just to save a few quid will end up costing far more.I've been driving for 38 years and have encountered quite a few cowboys who think the're mechanics.Luckily for us the people we have used for the past 11 years are great. My advice is stay with the one you have as there's no such thing as a cheap mot. When you find honest people like the ones you have then hang on to them.0

Surprised MSE Nick hasn't read the MSE guide to saving money on MOTs.

Like most posters advise above, its not the cost (cheapness) of the MOT test itself but the cost of repairs that's key.
Given the garage saved them £200 last year, its a no brainer to stay with someone you can trust. From MSE Martin - Some General Tips On Holiday Home Organisations and Sales Meetings

Is this the cheapest MOT(s) ever
The local authority I work for provides car loans for essential users, the purchaser arranges for their potential vehicle to be presented at one of our workshops for inspection, subsequent to the inspection the vehicle is valued. Dependent on the inspection / valuation a loan is given
Potential purchaser of a vehicle came in today, in discussions the vendor had offered for a one of payment of £40, free MOTs for as long as they owned the car
Anyone ever heard of this before0 -

I'd imagine you have to get them to carry out any repairs to qualify for the free mot.0 -

This is a no-brainer. Do you really think this 'big, online car parts firm' will look after you like a small garage will? Stick with the guys who care for their customers.0

I would stick with the one you know , I changed to a different garage for my cars 1st mot thinking go for the cheap one as it will pass straightaway they phoned to say it had failed it's mot and would cost me £200 pound to fix I told them not to touch it till I got a second opinion it turned out I didn't need the part it just needed tightened and it didn't cost me anything for I could not believe they were Gona rip me off xx0

When the new garage fails your car for its MOT and says you need £400 worth of repairs will you think yourself stupid for trying to save half the charge of the MOT?
Stick with the garage that you know and trust.0
