Do most students in halls take a laptop/pc ? Where my son is going there is free internet (included in rent) but he's not sure he really wants to take one. Would it seem peculiar ot tight if a student didn't bring one?

99.9% of the students will have a pc or laptop.
why doesn't he want take one??
that said even if other students think it is a bit odd, thats no reason to take one if he feels he doesn't need one in his room, variety is the spice of life. There will no doubt be plenty of computers to use in the library or open access suits on campus. personally i'd go crazy with out one!

Yes, there are facilities in hall but I wouldn't be able to guess how busy or in demand they are. I don't know what to do.0

The question is does he need one, keeping in mind that he may have an essay due in two days, there are no PC's available because everyone is working on essays,so he has to que for one for a good hour. As it is so busy the network crashes and nobody can log into computers. Its the weekend, and IT will look on the problem at Monday and the school deduct marks cause he should have been more prepared for incidences such as this and should have prepared the essay in plenty of time. Than he will really wish he didnt have to rely on the University network and brought his laptop. But especially as a student I cant stress enough how important it is to have it insured.Happy to be happy0

jollyanna... does your son already have a computer of some description? If the answer is yes; he should take it... its well worth it for the freedom it might offer... if he doesn't then don't rush out and buy one... let him start uni and see if he actually needs one! He will soon find out if it is a necessity and what he might need it for which will him to decide what spec he needs...0

Good little scenario there funschine!
I think he will want one once he gets there. How else is he going to do with his work without getting dressed?!! xGone ... or have I?0 -
I had similar experiences at Uni:) I have ever since worked at Uni's so I know that the PC networks can be very unstable at busy times.
If Your son doesn't have a PC, Once your sun is fully matriculated he might be able to get a cheaper student deal. There are loads on google. First I would approach the Uni's student association though. Some school even give laptops to new students!Happy to be happy0 -
Is it normal?
Id have to say at my uni it isnt
The vast majority of people who lived in flats or on campus used the university facilities with a few exceptions
Unless your sons uni has a poor network or he really needs one for his course nothing wrong with it at all0 -
Thanks everyone for your input. I think he'd benefit from his own pc for work and leisure. We've left it a bit late now as he's off on Sunday so maybe he'll start without while he sees how he gets on with the available facilities.0

Query now resolved as o/h has been to Comet and bought an Acer with a bundle of stuff for 450 sqids. I guess we could have been more savvy and moneysaving if we were not, as usual, doing everything at the last moment !0
