Home care cover including solar panels

Hi,

We live in a new build properly (2 years old) and our NHBC cover has just come to an end. We are seeking home care cover but the offer NHBC have advertised via a mailing with British Gas doesn't cover boilers with a solar panel integration. I don't understand fully understand how these things work but would appreciate any help/advice anyone has and if anyone knows of a company who will provide home care cover (plumbing, boiler etc) which includes solar panels.

Thanks

Sarah

    Welcome to the forum.

I thought all NHBC warranties were for 10 years?? On the NHBC website I can see nothing about a two year warranty http://www.nhbc.co.uk/WarrantiesandCover/Homeowners/

However, what type of solar do you have?

There is 'solar thermal' where the panels heat water which is fed to a hot water tank.

Or 'Solar PV' which produces electricity. Some of these PV systems have a device(e.g. Immersun) which diverts surplus electricity to the immersion heater in the hot water tank.
  • It's only part of the NHBC warranty, the one for the building is for ten years I believe.

We have 'solar thermal' - just had to check!

    Any ideas? 😀

Navitron is the font of knowledge about all things to do with solar hot water - especially their forum, and I am certain you will get advice from that source. http://www.navitron.org.uk/

There are thousands of posts, and an article by Martin, on MSE about home care cover. The consensus of opinion is they are very poor value - especially for a two year old system. You would be far better off putting the monthly premium into a bank account and find a local plumber to service and repair as required.
