What is the best way to play HEVC files on my PC? I'm currently using MPC with Madvr which play 10bit files but not HEVC.
I hear the Win 10 media player has HEVC support but I'm on Win 7.
Any ideas?

VLC will play them : - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
BUT only with the K-Lite codec pack installed :- http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/getmirror/k_lite_mega_codec_pack,1.html0 -
No. You don't need any additional codecs provided you have the latest version of VLC.VLC will play them : - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

VLC has improved - it used to be quite unfriendly. However, it has always been resource-heavy and may struggle with 1080p HEVC files unless you have a processor with some serious clout.
PotPlayer also handles HEVC/H265 and I think you'll find it a more friendly program to use, as well as being lighter on resources. If you do install it, you do not need the offered 'additional' codec at installation time to play HEVC.0 -

Do not listen to this guy
VLC can play HEVC natively since 2013
Media Player Classic-HC can also play HEVC including 10-bit h.265 files.
Never download codec packs. They are a relic of the mid 2000-s and no longer necessary, unless you want to clog up your computer with conflicts and bundled malware.poppy100
