Cutting breakfast bar worktop to be used as a 'standard' worktop.

Hi all,

We are getting an IKEA kitchen, but the wife found a silver sparkly worktop from B&Q which she loves

As we now know, IKEA units are 600mm deep so requires worktops of around 635mm for them to overhang so B&Q standard worktops are out the question.

I noticed their breakfast bars are 665mm wide, anyone know could these be cut down to size to fit?

Yes. It will cost more and breakfast bars are often shorter so be careful of too many, or badly placed joins.

What worktop is it? There are many more places than B&Q that sell worktop.

A google for "deep worktop" autocompletes with

    deep worktop 800mm
    deep worktop 900mm suppliers

So I would suggest a session of web searching with this, or the exact depth you're looking for, rather than just looking in B&Q

An island worktop may do the biz for you too

Cutting to size will need a hefty saw and the kind of blade that won't splinter the laminate.

Thanks for the quick reply :-)

Link below, (image doesn't do it justice though.)

I have seen similar worktops elsewhere (Howdens I think) but all the ones she likes seem to be 600mm, can't find any that would fit.

Edit: Looking online is tricky, as with the link above, it's hard to see the sparkle on the images, so never sure if its just grey or sparkly...if that makes sense.
Found 'prima stardust' and 'Axiom black fleck' which may be similar, but not in the larger sizes (except the breakfast bar ones)

It comes in 3 metre lengths, which is all you need, really. Go for it.

Thanks. Didn't know if there was something different between a breakfast bar and a standard worktop which would prevent us from doing this.

IKEA are doing the fitting so will see if they can do the cutting etc. Will get a quote from them to cut down, worktops do cost more too I know, will see what the difference in price is and decide.
We didn't like the IKEA worktops as much...

    Thanks again!

That will probably be a private arrangement between you and the fitter. When the fitter comes out to do your survey, speak with him about it then and he will tell you if he can do it or not, and what he will charge you.

We've literally just had our Ikea kitchen fitted and we've had plinth heaters installed. Ikea told us to talk to the fitter about it and the fitter just quoted us separately for doing it and we pay him direct, after the installation.

Yeah we had a lady do the pre-install visit on Tuesday and she said the fitter will quote for any non-standard/additional work. Once we confirm the details we will ask them and if possible order them, if not will just pick an IKEA worktop. Thanks.

    Ikea fitting is outrageously expensive!

Can't you get a recommendation from someone?

I thought it would be too but was surprised when she came back saying kitchen and fitting £3,500! (that's including oven/hob/slimline dishwasher)
Kitchen alone was at least £3000 for other quotes we had...
B&Q wanted to charge us £3500 just for fitting!!
  • You don't need a breakfast bar worktop they are finished on both edges which you don't need & therefore more expensive, you just need a normal 650mm worktop
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
