How long after purchase for council tax rise?

We completed on a house on 31st May, it's currently Council Tax band B, but, due to the previous occupier's extension, had an improvement indicator showing.

The sale price is now showing on rightmove, zoopla, etc.

How long do we have to wait before we can be confident our Council Tax isn't changing?

It depends how long the Valuation Office take to check and re-view the band - the council can't change anything (if needed) until the decision has been made.

I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

In some cases it can take 12 months.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

in other words keep money back to pay for any increase as it will be backdated to the date you purchased the property

Unless the law has changed back again, the increase only takes effect from the date of notification of the increased band.

We moved in last June, got letter in the September about the band change. They did not back-date it though which was nice. However we are trying to appeal the band change but they have not dealt with it yet....

I got it wrong once on here as it changed with effect from 1 April 2007, almost a year after I left VOA and I wasn't aware it had changed. So for 14 years it was backdated, until Parliament decided it was unfair..
