Excel Function - Is this Possible?

Options
Hi All,

I have a list of attributes within column B, namely "Man Utd," "Chelsea" and "Liverpool". For each of these values there are several subsets.

However what I am seeking to know is this, within this primary spreadsheet can I put into column A via a formula the values 1, 2, 3, 4 etc for each of the attributes based on their name? So "Chelsea" would have 1, 2, 3, and 4 etc and "Liverpool would have 1, 2, 3 and 4 etc?

Thanks in advance.

You may be best with your repeated excel issues looking at a specialised forum .

    http://www.excelforum.com/ for example.

  • This is Excel so the answer is most likely yes!

However I am not sure I fully understand your aim. Perhaps fill in a sheet manually to give an example and post it on here?

The best I can guess is that you wish col A to contain in rows "Liverpool 1", "Liverpool 2", etc but have no idea where your subsets are located or how they are arranged with respect to col B!

Explain more to get some help, please.

Yes, not enough information in the question to answer properly.

In general - write out the means of evaluating the contents of column B to arrive at the value in column A, in simple steps either verbally or mathematically. Then translate each of those steps into the Excel equivalent.
  • Can only agree with you again!

People do not realise how powerful Excel is, being therefore more says than one to skin a cat and posters need to fully explain in language that can be understood in Excel terms. Not always easy when you have limited experience.

....and a picture tells a thousand words, it's a spreadsheet of two halves, when the final whistle is.......oooops I digress :rotfl:

When I was using Excel at work to do some interesting stuff I bought myself a decent advanced Excel book.

However, I found one of the best resources was YouTube, there seem to be examples of almost everything on there.

If you want to get something along the following lines:-
    1 Chelsea
    2 Chelsea
    3 Chelsea
    4 Chelsea
    1 Liverpool
    ....
    etc, it's quite straightforward.

There are several ways to go about this depending on if your numbers are finite (i.e. 1-4 only) or your teams are finite (i.e. the list you've provided).

If the teams are finite (i.e. the list of teams you've supplied are all that are needed) then you can do the following:-
Enter your teams in groups of 4 in column B starting at B2.
In A2 enter the number 1
In A3 enter the following formula:=
    =if(b3=b2,a2+1,1)
    and drag down.

If the numbers are finite (i.e. 1-4) but the teams aren't, then it gets a little more complicated.
