Car Insurance for elderly lady

Hi,
New to this site so hope this question makes sense - any advice gratefully received...

My Dad (just turned 80) has insured his cars for many years and has the maximum no claims bonus. He also puts my Mum (77), his wife, as a named driver on the insurance each year and has done so for many many years. The insurance has always been in his name with my Mum as a named driver. She has therefore never been insured on her own policy as such, as she has always been the named driver on a policy in my dad’s name. The car insurance policies have been with a number of different companies over the years, depending on best like for like price. The current policy expires and is due for renewal in November.

My Dad, has been diagnosed with a terminal illness and is not expected to live long in to the new year. He has asked me to check out the situation with my Mum taking over the car insurance: She is now effectively the only driver of the car and so when the car insurance comes up for renewal in November he would like it to be in my Mum’s name, possibly with him as a named driver on her policy (just in case). At some time during the next car insurance year he will pass away so I think he is trying to be organised in advanced of the inevitable. He is worried about the no claims aspect of the insurance and that the policy fee may sky rocket. the question is thus, if an insurance policy is in one person’s name and they have the maximum no claims, can the always named driver on their policy ‘inherit’ some of their no claims bonus and if yes, how do we go about this - its not the sort of thing you can plug into the insurance comparison website that I always use to renew their insurance ?

Many thanks
H:)
