    Thanks for advice and comments.

    Central heating has been used intermittently over the 'summer'.

    The hoses are now declared free of debris and do not require replacement, a saving of £45.00. It seems that there is a persistent problem with sludge though I'm not convinced yet that this is kosher. Seems that a six / seven year old boiler is not considered as new anymore!

    The second engineer confirmed the need for a flush, put the heating and hot water back on and recommended the magnetic thing. Mum's happy, I'm paying the bill and all's back to normal in Gers Tower. For now. I want mention her car service and MOT from a well known major car dealer in Glasgow which didn't happen despite it being booked in. I think a head rolled in the offices of AC.
