Do I have to accept the insurance companies settlement

After the plumber caused a leak which damaged floor and skirting in 2 rooms its taken about 2 months of toing and froing between me and the insurance company to finally come to an agreed figure. I was surprised to hear that they will only repay me when I have a valid invoice from a company. Do I have too accept this or can I insist on a cash settlement?

The damage hasn't been fixed yet but this will let us make some changes to the house.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

If you don't intend doing the repairs as such, then you need to go back to your insurer and talk to them about getting cash in lieu.

(Expect this to be less than the cost of repairs as you won't be getting the VAT element)

    Thanks Quentin.

Its not my insurance company its the plumbers. Problem is the wife has now got ideas on changing the flooring in one of the rooms and getting carpet and not laminate as it is now.

Theres also a desk that was damaged that we want to change which the insurance company say we need to buy and then pass them the invoice.
