Closing my claim and I wont get paid???

I'm due to be paid UC in the next week or two (18th of the month) but have aquired a job and so I am 'signing off ' early (7th of the month), I have been informed by the DWP that I will not receive any money for the previous month and will not be paid upto the date I sign off because I am signing off before my payment date.... how is this allowed, I should surely be entitled to the money calculated up to the day I sign off. I need that money to pay bills for the month leading up to my claim closing, what should I do?

Comments

  • Don't sign off till your paid seems like the simplest answer.
  • I'm going abroad to work so contacting the DWP to sign off is gonna be a lot more ridiculous but, yeah it seems like I'm gonna have to wait and try to get in touch with them after my payment date.

It seems crazy that you won't be entitled to any payment, but I've heard similar stories.

Whoever told you that is incorrect.

You don't 'sign off' UC in the same way you did JSA.

Indeed JCPs cannot close a UC claim in the way they could a JSA claim.

You have to ring up to do this.

It could be that they thought you wanted to withdraw your claim now (which you shouldn't).

Merely report the change of circumstances by phone to the UC national contact centre after you start work.

Your claim will then close if you fail to contact them the following month.

[In short, 'withdrawing' a claim is if you no longer satisfy the conditions ie you win £20k, etc. Sadly some claimants have been caught out by saying yes when asked if they wish to 'withdraw' their UC claims. Whereas going employed, or self-employed is merely a change of circs under UC, unlike JSA.]
Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.

That makes sense. It's all down to terminology. Staff on UC should ask questions if somebody is effectively withdrawing a claim by saying they don't want to continue with the claim. I suspect that isn't happening, and where the problems stem from.
  • I guess this is another example of the DWP punishing people for finding work
