TSB launching Android Pay

Hi

I guess pretty much every TSB customer got this e-mail this morning.

Personally I do not really see the point in using phones to pay for things when it needs charging and power, can be a target for theft and is usually slower than just using a contactless card, but there is nowt as strange a folk :)

But I know some people will love this, and it may well be useful to try to get the 5% cashback, as many of us find TSB's contactless card will often request PIN entry regularly, making getting the full fiver a month difficult.

  • If it works similarly to Apple Pay, it may save some people the aggro of the contactless payment constantly being declined!

It will definitely do away with the aggro of contactless payments being rejected so often. It will also allow you to spend exactly £100, e.g. by buying gift cards of exactly that value.

It's quite a hilarious claim it's "usually slower than just using a contactless card" because I'll be out of the shop before they've even got their card out of their wallet/purse. Other misconceptions of paying through mobile devices have been discussed in the Apple Pay thread.

It's not that funny. This only works if you carry the phone in your hand all the time. If you always have a phone in your hand, you could simply slip a contactless card in your phone wallet and have the same effect ;)

I do have Android Pay and it is not as fast as straight up contactless. You see an 'authorising...' on terminals with a couple of seconds delay. You don't get this with straight up contactless. It's also failed to register at all on several occasions and you might have just as well as waved a carrot in front of the terminal with the same effect.

It will all be academic after the end of December. My transactions after that will go on to a card that allows minimum payments each month for a long time.

What, like the TSB Platinum purchase card, which give you 20 months interest free on purchases and 5% cashback if you use it via Apple Pay and might well, given this thread's topic, start to do so with Android Pay?

  • That ends in December even for a new cardholder.

Unless they extend it as it nears expiry, there's no benefit to TSB vs. a bank with a good 0% rate.

Will be nice to try Android pay as they still don't trust me with Contactless!

I don't about android, but apple pay is certainly slower than using a contactless card because it usually (always?) authorises the transaction.

No. Perhaps they know I don't have a phone smart enough to use Android Pay!

What ends in December for new cardholders?

If you're referring to the 1% cashback on credit cards, this lasts until 30 September 2017; it says so on their website.

I pay with my Apple Watch, which always sits on my arm. It's a great deal faster than digging into my handbag for my purse, getting a card out of my purse, tapping it, putting the card back into my purse, putting the purse back into my handbag, closing the handbag again. It's also a great deal more convenient, and I feel safer as I can't lose my cards. And not even to talk about transactions that are higher than £30 - whilst you can't do those with a contactless card, I just pay with my Apple Watch as I do for purchases which are under £30. That works in all the places I usually shop at, including at the small hairdresser's, the butcher's and the Coop in the village.

Granted, paying by Android Pay might be slower but I still find it hilarious when people say paying with a mobile device "is usually slower than paying with a contactless card".
