Red Sea diving, solo traveller

Hi
Need some help on a trip I'm considering. I want to go to the Red Sea for a diving holiday (and general relaxation). I have heard Dahab is more chilled out compared to Sharm (however am open for suggestions).
Thing is I'm planning on going on my own, main reason, none of my friends dive. From what I have read the Red Sea is more geared to the charter / package market (am happy to be proven wrong) and this would mean single supplements, etc. Also, frankly, I have no idea how the charter / package market works as I prefer doing DIY travel with scheduled airlines.
I guess I would like advice on getting out to Dahab and finding accomodation (and also transfers) and the best way of doing it (and maybe any suggestions on when is the best time to go, where to stay, etc).
I will be doing my own research, but would appriciate any suggestions from this most excellent board.
Many thanks in advance for any help provided.

Just buy any of the diving magazines and you'll find that once out of Sharm itself there are lots of places where singletons are not unusual.0
