  • DOYOUSPAIN - this is the only company i have had problems with, mainly at the rental side and so far DOYOUSPAIN have not helped in any way what so ever, do NOT use either !!
  • I'm going to Gran Canaria and was about to book a car when I read all the T&C and found out I need a credit card and they will charge me a deposit of around £1000!

My questions is: do you know of any company that does not need a credit card from me? I do not have one....

And how to avoid paying the HUUUGE deposit?

    Thanks in advance.

Probably no companies would not accept a credit card and have little or no deposit, if you look at it sensibly they are giving a car worth many thousands of euros to someone from another country and so want some comfort they'll bring it back and not damage it.

If you use a credit card then the deposit is only reserved and not taken, so when you return in good order then the reserved money is just cancelled.

This doesn't address the issues around the small number of operators who will over charge you and cause all sort of hassle so do a bit of research first and also take out separate excess insurance cover.

Do you need a rental car ?

Use taxis or the bus service to get around.

Use a reputable local company like Cabrera Medina /Cicar.

No excess insurance. No deposit. Pay on pick up by credit, debit or cash. Take the car back with the same amount of fuel as when you picked it up.

We have just returned from a weeks holiday in girona Spain and booked our car hire through DoYouSpain we also took out their platinum excess waiver insurance to ensure we were fully covered. When we arrived to collect the car from the goldcar hire desk all was going well until they asked me what insurance package I required, their standard 1100 euro insurance which would be blocked on my credit card and would be taken in the event of any incident regardless of who's fault it was or their full cover for 128 euros. I told them I had taken out my insurance with DoYouSpain so didn't require any but they told me that they didn't recognise any other insurance and would have to take out one of their policies. As we wanted to get to our destination I reluctantly took their full cover, they handed over the keys and we were on our way. I have emailed DoYouSpain about this but have had the same automated response telling me due to this been a busy period it could be several weeks before I get a response. Why is hiring a car made so complicated and such a mine field ?!!

Well if you had already taken out excess insurance then you should have paid the €1100 deposit on your credit card and if there was an incident you could have claimed this back from your insurance.

It was silly to pay an additional €128 when you already had cover in place.

It seems many people buy excess insurance without understanding how it works
