Just goes to show how variable these things can be. My problem was very serious and potentially life threatening.

There was no way either mentally or physically I could have continued to drive while the DVLA came to a decision so it was a simple matter of do I surrender my licence or do I wait for the DVLA to make their enquiries and then inevitably revoke my licence. Faced with that I surrendered my licence for the reason I've given above.

So true, my friend had a severe stroke a few years ago. 6 weeks off the road and no notification needed. (Not sure if it's current procedure).
My MIL has limited mobility, wears a large strap on shoe type thing due to ulcerated toes, history of heart problems, suffers dizziness, gone through 2 hip replacements and is diabetic etc etc, oh she's 83 btw and they're more than happy to let her keep going.

As for the comment about "she's only a nurse" I'm sorry but I think that's poor advice. She may not be a doctor but she is still a medical professional and her advice needs to be taken seriously. Of course it is what the consultant says in his letter that will be paramount.

Of course a nurses advice should be listened too but that's all! They are not qualified to make clinical decisions or decide who should or shouldn't be driving, that's for the Doctors/Consultants to decide. A Chiropodist is a trained health professional.....

As it is the OP has followed the nurses advice & now may have a fight to get his licence back.... despite all his tests being clear & never seeing a consultant, that would be my biggest concern!
Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!
  • This is a sterile argument, I'm afraid. The simple fact is the OP has informed the DVLA and so the option of ignoring the nurse's advice is not open to him.

We will have to agree to disagree on the issue of what weight to give to the nurse's advice.
