Smart phone insurance

Decided to post here rather than in mobile forum as this is a specific insurance question.

With the cost of smartphones now it really does seem sensible to insure but how?

Content insurance seems to be out as I don't live in my own home and contents are insured in owners name
What about individual insurance via a local insurance broker?
I'm buying from Carphone Warehouse cc £500 how about insuring there. It's a new Apple iPhone I'm buying

Is there anything I've missed out and what exactly should I be looking for

As always thanks for the advice

Kevin

My insurance is to keep the previous phone and use that if anything happens to the new one.

Check the terms, quite often they give you a refurb phone anyway. Cheaper to buy one of those than take out insurance?

But a cheaper phone to tide you over?

  • How careless are you? Neither my wife or I have ever had phone insurance. I've had smartphones for many years and always put them in a decent case and used a screen protector.

Now, my careless brother-in-law has replaced his iphone several times. But he's rich and doesn't care.

    How careful/careless are you?

Careless? Out of 10. 6/7 but it is definitely going into a good case and with screen protector this time around

That said though on a £500 piece of gear that you carry about with you I do think insurance is a necessity; certainly for the first two years of a phones life.

Well, in 18 years of mobile phone ownership, I've managed to mildly damage one phone, once, back in 2005. I'd have spent thousands on unnecessary insurance otherwise. I've dropped my current phone loads of times but never made much damage other than cracking a screen protector once. None of my phones have got dropped in water because I'm not an idiot. (Go find the person who soaked their phone kayaking).

If you're going to get a screen protector, it's better to buy the £8 glass ones than the poundshop type. They're significantly better and don't need replacing.
  • Gadget Cover do ours, and we've found them good. You get discount for multiple gadgets too on the same policy. That said, echo above about how much you think you need it - we have toddlers so paying a premium against damage seemed sensible. Plus all policies have an excess - check how much it was. Can't remember who it was with but one company said they had a 250 excess for damage....

I took a £60 phone swimming in the sea once. £60 for a phone, i was mad to pay that much :)

Since then, i have not had any issues. Your insurance is keep the last phone or buy a cheaper one to tide you over.
