Vauxhall engines

  • I'm surprised at this - I've just scrapped a 2000 Astra G Estate 1.6 16v which had done 198,000 miles on the original engine and was still running like a dream.

I had to scrap it because of other parts which had worn out which would have ended up costing me around £1.5k to get fixed for MOT.

One of the few cars I've had that I really didn't want to get rid of.

I have to support the above.

I had a 2000 W Reg Astra 1.6 which got way beyond 200,000 miles before we parted company. I ran it for nine years and then gave it to my kids who ran it for a further three years.

It was only sold when the clutch gave out and would have cost about £400+ to replace. It was sold to a mechanic who intended to fix it himself. It's still on the road.

    Hi,

I want to warn readers about VX engines. I've had three cars in a row that haven't stayed the course, despite being properly serviced at the proper times.

I first bought an Astra with the Suzuki 1.7 diesel engine. It sprang a severe oil leak when it reached 130K miles. I thought that I had just been unlucky and bought another, same spec. This one conked out at 125K miles.

So I switched to petrol, buying a Vectra 1.8. This one only got to 85K miles. It broke down on a long run just before last Christmas and I had to get a replacement engine fitted to carry on with our holiday. This one was a s/h engine and, now, some 8 months later, it has started to use more oil than it should.
So I don't believe that I'll be buying another Vauxhall. It's a pity because they are a make that caters well for very long legged people like me. If anyone knows of another brand that would suit, please let me know.

What are you doing to them? LOL.

Only joking, sounds like you've been unlucky.

Ex Company Car Astra 1.7cdti (isuzu engine) taken from 0 miles to 105k miles in 12 months no issues.

    Private cars.....
Cavalier 2.0 GLS (M PLate) taken from 120k to 175k miles, no issues, still being used by the old boy over the road to move caravans
Vectra C - 2.0 cdti (120 8v) - taken from 88k to 237k miles. No issues, other than service parts and DMF failing at 210k (was the original DMF though), still used as a taxi in the local area.
Current = Insgnia 2.0 cdti 160 - owned since 22k miles now on 102k miles, has never missed a beat.

Wouldn't hesitate to have a Vauxhall again personally, although I must admit 90% of my miles are motorway and very low stress on the engine.
Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....
