Depends - what you define as 'small', and how fast do you what to drive on the motorway!
I used to drive a Rover 200 SDi - though it had a 2.0 litre engine, it was a pig going up gradients on the motorway.
While my current Citroen C3 1.4 HDi is great going along in the 65 - 80 mph range, pulls well on the same gradients, and I love powering past someone when the situation demands it.I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -
VW Golf every time, although the fiesta will be cheaper, the VW Golf will hold its value over the time. Not knocking the fiesta as that ecoboost engine is excellent, but really can't beat the VAG version.
I'm not keen on the A3, so no comment on that one

I've had my trusty Fiesta Mk6 Style Climate 1.25 petrol for 5 years and now it's time for a change.
I travel 12k maybe 13k miles a year. I travel to the office 3 times a week which is a 50-mile round trip via mostly on the motorway and A roads. I work from home for the other 2 weekdays and then on the weekend it's the usual social driving.
I have a few possible choices of new car in mind:- Audi A3 1.6 TDI
- Ford Fiesta 1 litre EcoBoost
- VW Golf 1.6 TDI
My budget is £10k cash. I'll be selling my Fiesta on Gumtree.
I'd really appreciate some advice as to whether I should opt for a petrol or diesel. I'm after a hatchback or saloon that is relatively cheap to service. I did consider perhaps a BMW 1 series diesel but the servicing costs of a BMW and perhaps the Audi put me off (apparently the servicing is expensive).
In the same position as you I bought... a Lexus IS.
So not convinced any advice I offer will be helpful
But, I figured my mileage was big enough, but not excessively large, that something reliable with slightly bigger servicing costs wouldn't be *hugely* extortionate in comparison to a smaller car.
I await the servicing and repairs with baited breath...

Good choice - Toyotas are pretty reliable - I had a Cressida many tears ago - a hardy beast it was.0
