It is surely the duty of all citizens to report apparent tax evasion to the relevant authorities.
Who's "evading" tax? They are, we presume, paying all the tax that is due and is being billed. The CT band is set by an independent national banding body.

    Yes, definitely grass them up.
Just hope the council don't decide to put your and your neighbours bands up instead.

The only that need changing is the 25% for single occupants, should be 50%

Several people are under the misapprehension that councils set the band a property is in. They don't- that's the valuation Office, a central Gov't agency, and they will only change a band when a property is sold- ours changed when we bought it as a result of the extensions built by the previous owners, 15 years previously

I don't think it gets rebanded straight away. Not sure if there's a time limit or if it's only when they sell. Bands are not based on current prices.

Close, yes it gets rebanded on sale to the next owner.
You can do what you like to a property building wise, extending, rebuilding and the such like (within the laws of planning ect), the council tax will remain the same untill its sold and then the new owners pay the new correct banding.
Personally think its madness but their ya go.

I've never understood which d1pstick decided 25% was appropriate.

I can only imagine it was because of the proportion of single parents...

The below paragraph is on my councils council tax website.

Bands shown do not include the effect on value of alterations or improvements carried out by the current owners.
Only when a house is sold will they be taken into account and from the date of sale.

    This ^

Our last house wasn't rebanded until after we sold. It then went up two bands. We had added a large extension under permitted development.

Here our band (G) is the same as neighbours who have houses twice as large and worth twice as much. That's just the way it is.

If the house was not removed from the Valuation List upon its demolition and the original entry remains, the band cannot be increased until the house is sold.

Usually the VOA would be notified of the demolition and delete the property from the VL but for whatever reason this was not done.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
