Premium effected by a claim I didn't make?

I had my car keyed a few months ago and contacted my insurance as I was going to make a claim. But decided not to and paid for it myself. I was told my directline that it wouldn't be on my history as a claim or anything like that. Now I going to take out a new quote with admiral and they started asking me about it. My quoted premium was £709 online and now it's gone up to £1000+ because of this.

Is there anything I can do about this?

There's nothing you can do about this incident being on your record.

In future never contact your insurer regarding a possible claim - only if you are making a claim.

Whenever you report a loss like this it will be entered on your record as such (ie a loss not a claim), and put on the shared database for other insurers to check you told the truth in your application.

Most insurers require you to disclose losses as well as claims when asking for quotes which you must do (to fail to allows the insurer to void your policy over a false application)

(Do some more quotes now, with this in your history to see if Admiral remain competitive)

Admiral have blacklisted me as they are not appearing on the search comparsion websites now. I was told by directline it wouldn't be on my record. They are now saying it 'hasn't been put on the renewal date'. And also it shouldn't rise my premium.

So now I'm stuck with directline and unable to take out car insurance with any other company, as it comes up as a claim on my file.

The stupid thing is, that the incident comes under the claims section online. So I have to put it as a claim.

They may have decided not to quote you because they discovered your false application.

You may have misunderstood what you were told by DL when you decided not to claim (in that this won't go down as a "claim")

You won't be stuck with DL at all.

Follow the MSE guide to car insurance (link at the top of the page)

Make sure you disclose the keying when filling in quote applications!

I first first quoted >£700 online and then had to call them up because I changed my details a few times (to see if the quote changes). They then asked me about the incident and gave me a new quote of £1200+

    That may be the problem.

Yes that's what got admiral removed from confused.com for me :) But I called admiral up any way and they were happy take out insurance until they started talking about the 'incident' and treated it as if it were a claim. A £400 - £500 premium increase because of this, and they just said 'there is nothing I can do'.

You can go elsewhere, but when getting insurance getting quotes with and without an incident or points etc is risky because they may see it as an attempt at fraud rather than a query as to how much of a difference it makes.

Incidents push the premium up the same as protected no claims does not mean the premium wont increase after a claim.

I was getting a quotes before I knew I had to put down the incident. I can't believe this is going to be stuck on my record for 5 years.

I just checked the quotes again and they have increased by £100. I don't understand why they upped it by £500 on the phone and acted as if it was a claim.

When you ask for quotes online before completing the form you are asked to confirm the information given is true.

The insurers spot you playing and realise you don't always tell the truth.

In future make sure you are anonymous!

But be aware now that you must always disclose the keying loss - insurers usually ask for 3 to 5 years history.
