SUV / 4x4 recommendations please?

Hi, after just being refunded for a faulty Discovery, we are now looking for a new car but not sure where to start so looking for recommendations (or ones to avoid please!).

We have approx £9,000 to spend.

We are looking for something as reliable and easy to maintain as possible, and affordable to run (as affordable as any are!).

Our main concern is ability to tow a caravan so need a minimum of 2ltr engine and preferably a 4x4.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts...

  • Kia sportage 2l diesel. manual will pull up to 2 tonne. Might have some manufacturers warranty left as well at that price.

Ssangyong Korando. You will get one with some warranty remaining. Was a CC tow car of the year.

If 4x4 is a requirement never dismiss Subaru.

How heavy is the caravan? As in, what's your actual towing requirement rather than engine displacement?

Most 2+ ltr diesel 4x4's should handle 2000kg anyway. Probably dropping to about 1500kg if you're going for a 1.7+ ltr, but you might struggle to find one of them for budget.
  • Thanks everyone. Towing requirement is 2000kg. I would love another discovery but unfortunately we had a million and one problems with ours (fortunately was refunded fully by the dealer) and for our money we would be looking at something old with a lot of mileage and been there and been burnt! Was hoping for alternatives so we could get something newer and maybe a little more economical for our money. :-)

Your budget should get you a very decent Honda CRV 2.2 diesel.

He said reliable, anything with a Landrover badge definitely isn't.

You buy a Landrover because that's what you want.

Would be my suggestion too, very reliable (my one went back to the lease company with 100,000 on it as good as new) has a good stability system that is designed to control towed loads.
European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.
