cancelling a holiday

I was supposed to be going on a family holiday, myself, my girlfriend, her mum and dad and her sister and her sisters boyfriend, we booked the holiday as a package holiday all 6 together.
my girlfriend now cannot travel for medical reasons so I won't be travelling either, when we tried to cancel myself and my girlfriend off the holiday we where told thats fine but there would be no refund which is fine we have travel insurance, a day later we received a call saying that we had been misinformed and the member of staff who told us that we could cancel the two of us was wrong and we can only cancel the whole holiday (all 6 passengers) or cancel none.
as of us being unable to cancel we will be unable to claim against our travel insurance.
has anyone experienced this and know any way around it?

Are you sure your travel insurers can't help? Explain the situation to them and see what they say.
If you girlfriend went and was taken ill there, the insurance should cover it, so how is the cancellation policy relevant?

Were you or your girlfriend the lead booker on the holiday? That would be the usual reason for having to cancel the whole thing. Some more information on the holiday would be helpful.
