Reclaiming Money Sent to a Bank in Error

Hi All,

Hoping someone can give me a bit of direction here.

I bank with Santander and have my credit card with them also. I have a payment set up whereby I can pay my credit card from my bank account as and when required. I sent a payment a couple of weeks back, only to find it had not reached my credit card. On investigation, I found that I had sent the money to an external bank that I had previously sent a payment to in error.

The erroneous payment was to a bank account for an online foreign currency company which I used back in May (the details I got from here coincidentally). The problem I have is that I cannot remember for the life of me the name of the company to contact them to arrange a refund. I have the bank account details and reference number for them (Metro Bank), but not the name. I have contacted Metro Bank who say that as I am not the account holder, they cannot give me any details and referred me to Santander. I have contacted Santander who have said they will not be able to pursue a refund unless I can find out the name of the account holder!

So, I'm in a Catch 22 situation! I'm pretty sure Santander will be able to chase the refund, after all, I have the bank details, just not the company name (I hope they are still trading!). I am just about to trawl through my deleted emails folder to see if I can find it that way.

Anyone got any other suggestions?

Thanks

How did you find the foreign exchange company in the first place, you said you found the details from here does that mean it was a thread on here? if so you could go to your profile and look at posts you have made and you will find the thread again and hopefully the name of the account holder/company is on there,

the other solution is to put the sort code and account number in to here and see what it brings up.

  • Write a letter to account # xxxx c/o Metro bank.

The bank will forward the letter to their customer who,
hopefully, will get in touch with you.
  • If you used the forex company previously what was the description of the transaction on your statement?
  • The company might be TravelFx as they are a foreign currency company and the only way they accept payment is via faster payment and they also use Metro bank. This company is a online company and is one that comes up as a high rate on Moneysavingexpert travel money.

There are many as I have used Coventgardenfx and Thomas Exchange UK both that I found on the travel money link on here could it be one of these?
