Next Online Shopping - credit limit

Options
Hi all

Does anyone understand how the next credit limit online works?

I placed an order an order the other day with them and was told it had been paid for when I collected it from the store?

I don't really understand as I did not, at any point, say I wanted to open store credit or anything. I assumed I would pay when I picked it up!!

Is this going to affect my credit rating? I am so very confused. I love next clothes but this is so sneaky and is really putting me off shopping with them in the future to be honest

You must have chosen the option to open a credit account.

Mmm a credit rating that only you can see won't be much use to lenders. It will most likely be on your credit history as a credit account.

Yes, Next are well-known for this scam, and it's well past the time they should be held to account for it. They simply do not explain that obtaining one of their catalogues or shopping online automatically opens a credit account and as a result you are smacked with a credit check.

Will it affect your credit rating (i.e. the ease or otherwise with which you can obtain credit)? Yes.

What to do? Close the Next account immediately and tell the sneaky sods why you're doing so.

    I disagree

I opened an account with Next in February and it clearly stated that I was opening a credit account and credit checks would be carried out. When you place an order it asks you if you wish to add to account or pay by card.

It doesn't, it's all very clear I'm afraid, the problem is nobody reads stuff they just click tick tick click and done. They do ask if you want a credit account and do say they will carry out a credit check. If they didn't do you really think they would get away with it?

In fact if you go on their site and open an account they say you can order and pay etc but if you want an account you have to apply - absolutely nothing automatic about it.

So how easy is it to go online and immediately buy something with your credit card? Not easy, I think is the answer. To start with you have to open an account (I just checked) and a mandatory field is DoB, which of course is a strong hint that they're into smacking you with a credit check. Thereafter, it's well buried in the small print.

Have you ever been approached by one of their reps in the shop? They certainly don't tell you about the credit check assault when they try and blag you into opening an account! "Why do you need my DoB"? "Oh, that's just for security." Liars! They need it to open a credit account.

I placed an online order with Next a couple of years ago for collection in store.

Used my credit card to pay and declined their offer of a Next account.

Lo and behold there was an entry on my credit history (complete with credit limit) until I raised a dispute with the CRAs.
It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.

I agree with the above, I bought some clothes for my son on line in their sale before Christmas and it was made very clear that I would be credit checked for an account or I could pay online with a card. You would have had to have had an eyesight problem not to see this. It was extremely clear.

The answer is that it's very easy actually, I've done it a number of times. Ordered items, paid by credit card, no entry on my credit files.
  • On a similar theme. I placed a new customer order with Next today. I did NOT open a credit account and paid for the order by credit card.

Even though i have not opened a credit facility with next the T&C's before you submit your order allude that they run a credit check. Would this be the case even though i have NOT opened a credit line with them?

They only run a soft check if paying by card. A full credit search is only done if you open credit account. I believe that they are just checking ID with the soft search.
