The mad, mad world of credit reporting

Options
How's this for sheer stupidity, brought about in part by credit reporting but also because of a bum retailer?

One of my lads has just moved, so as you often do when moving house he went to buy some furniture for the new gaff. Needed to get a large sofa on credit, so went to Barker and Stonehouse (they are big in the north-east but not sure of their national presence).

Get this load of b*****ks: they would only deliver it to his old address, since that's what was showing on the CRA's reports about him. Their "reasoning" was that since he wasn't showing on the electoral register at his new address they couldn't deliver the stuff there. Now this must happen all the time - people asking for credit at a new address - but the likes of Barker and Stonehouse don't seem to realise this basic fact of life.

Needless to say, getting the stuff delivered to his old address was a real pain in the backside. If it was me, I would have told them what to do with the sofa, but he was getting a good deal so he had to put up with their idiocy.

That does sound nuts, Gingerbob. What do they expect you to do, take your completion docs/deeds in there to prove you have moved? The world is going mad.

So it's Barker & Stonehouse causing the issue really ? Nothing to do with credit reporting ?

Yes, in big part. It's their interpretation of the CRA information, but the root cause is the way the CRAs operate.
  • The finance is via Creation Consumer Finance and it clearly states that they only deliver to the home address of the applicant - I can imagine your "outrage" if a credit firm would provide credit for a delivery to any old address regardless of what was held by the CRA.

Only GingerBob could argue that it's a bad thing to only deliver items to where records show you live!

In fact, I'm shocked that anyone in his family would even use credit, seeing how all the banks and CRAs are evil and useless.....

You talk garbage! His home address is his NEW ADDRESS! To only agree delivery to a former address is bonkers and just the sort of stupidity that the CRAs perpetrate.

Barker and Stonehouse: "We can only deliver this sofa to where you used to live". What a bunch of jerks.

I'm with GingerBob on this one. It's ridiculous that they only deliver to an electoral roll address. In his son's case, he's applied from his home address, why would they deliver to his old address ?

It definitely is a stupid situation that i would say is 100% the doing of Barker and Stonehouse and the credit providing company that they use!.

If it really was the best deal that you could get anywhere i would have paid for it on my credit card and go it delivered to the new address. I would have then applied for a balance transfer card with a 0% fee and transferred the balance if i didn't want to pay for it outright.

Having the sofa delivered to an old address and having to then move it to a new address sounds like more hassle than its worth.

Yes, that's a possibility, but it was 0% credit I believe, so I guess he didn't consider that alternative. Personally I would never get anything on shop credit, 0% or otherwise. The CC option is invariably the best.

Bought a house with my girlfriend in March. Wanted a new bed and then ended up needing a new suite also as the old one would not go up the stairs of the townhouse that we had bought.

Visited a furniture shop and a bedroom shop, both had interest-free offers so we took them. Neither of us were registered at the new address and had not even moved in at the time we arrange for the bed as we did that in advance.

The credit in both cases was instantly approved (one in her name and one in mine) and we had no issues with either the finance or arranging delivery to the new house.

    Purely a retailer issue.
Different types of information & data can be used inappropriately in all manner of different and broad contexts and situations, so hardly the credit reference agency's fault that the retailer did not apply the appropriate process in this situation.
