Locked out of Gmail

My son has been locked out of his gmail and cannot log in. He knows his id and password but it will not let him sign in, keeps telling him I need to verify.

He's given an alternative email address but still nothing.

He didn't set up a phone verification number.

Is there anything he can do.

He uses this email address for all his online gaming accounts and needs it for verification codes etc.

I take it the password isn't the same 1 he uses for his gaming account, hasn't told anyone the password or was easy to guess ?

No, he's quite paranoid over passwords and uses numbers letters upper and lower case, never the same password.

I've just had a go with the above link and got

Google couldn't verify it's you, so you can't sign in to this account right now.

He said he set this account up before you needed to add a backup email or phone number.

When I had mistakenly deleted some GMail emails which I wanted, GMail were very helpful recovering them for me.
