Non-toxic wood treatment for squirrel feeder

we've bought a wooden squirrel feeder for bottom of the garden but its quite a soft wood, and our previous one worked well, but has almost fallen apart/rotted due to the winters, can anyone recommend a safe/preferred wood treatment we could use on the new one please?

A kind of creosote/stain/varnish type to use, but one preferably non-toxic to animals?

I would use tung oil - as I already have it and it is good for human food surfaces.
