Is there a way to avoid the £20 fee HSBC imposes?

hello!
I want to transfer a large amount to my barclays account from my hsbc because they have a ridiculous restriction of 10k transfer per day and their online banking is excruciatingly painstaking
to do that they charge me £20
is there a way to avoid that?
I must have been given a cheque booklet but I cannot find it
thanks!

Just ask for a cheque book, the cheque will start earning interest on Day 2.

So I ask for a cheque book, they give it to my straight away and they guide me to complete it as I dont have a clue and then I go next door to Barclays to transfer the money?

Yes just make a cheque out from your HSBC cheque book and pay it into your Barclays account. Or using HSBC's online banking set up £10K bill payments (faster payments) to automatically go out over several days until you have made the total payment required.

If I lost the cheque book, can I walk in to HSBC and they can write a cheque for me?

Yes but they will charge you (probably £20) for a Bankers cheque.

OK I managed to find a booklet
The account is in three names, do all three have to sign it or just me is enough?
Is there a guide how to complete it or I should go to the bank to help me?

    thanks!
  • If you request a cheque book it won't receive it immediately; it needs to be printed and sent to you as it contains details specific to your account. Keep it safe as if you lose it you'll have to put a stop on it.

Who needs to sign the cheque depends on how your account signatory information is set up. You'll need to check this with HSBC if you're unsure.

A cheque is very simple to complete; you'll need to complete the following details:

    1) Date - the date you're writing the cheque
    2) Payee - the name or names in which the Lloyds account you're paying into is held.
    3) The full amount in words
    4) The amount in figures in the box on the right hand side
    5) Sign the cheque

Depends on the terms of the account.

I'd just pay the £20 for the CHAPS payment.

Your alternative would be to leave this country and it's horrible people and organisations so that you wouldn't need to bother interacting with them any more - a win-win for all of us.
  • Whether one signature is sufficent or whether a second or/and a third will depend on the authority you signed with the bank when the account was opened.
Nobody on here has access to that information.

Why can't you transfer the money online, be much easier.

I can't imagine why someone would keep money with a bank that has a 'ridiculous restriction' and is 'excruciatingly painstaking', and IMPOSES a fee.

As for the cheque 'booklet', I don't know of any other bank that supplies cheque books containing fewer than 25 cheques.

    Very odd.
