Windows update not working?

Options
I was running various scans on my laptop & also decided to update Windows if there was any updates (it's a Windows 7 laptop).

I gave up waiting on it searching for updates. I went to town, came back & still nothing.

Is the update service for Windows 7 down or have they switched it off? I know Win7 is 'old' but i wouldn't have thought it'd be considered old enough to switch off the updates.

A problem for many, with various fixes. One of my clients (last updated June) cleared itself after installing updates in order ...(note they may take a while)

    KB3020369 5/11/15

  • Unfortunately i don't even get to the stage where i can select what to install. It just searches for updates & stays searching.

Could be a messed up installer.

The easier way to update quickly is to use wsus offline update. It will even filter out the blacklisted updates.

You don't have to do it via that option :)

I had this exact same problem after doing a factory restore on my Windows 7 desktop pc (see one of my threads on here, NiftyDigits was my hero).

I fixed the windows updates 'hanging' problem by downloading and installing two updates (I got the details from another site but don't have them to hand).
I am almost certain they were the same updates that grumpycrab quotes.

What I did was change my windows updates option to 'never check for updates' (or something similarly worded).

I then downloaded KB3020369 and KB3172605 to my computer and scanned them for viruses.

I installed the first one, then restarted my computer. I then installed the second one and restarted my computer again.

I then went back to windows updates and selected 'check for updates'. I left it running for about 30-40 mins. I think and when I next checked there were updates for me to install.

Try it, hopefully it will work for you.:) If not, I'll try and dig out the details I used as it was slightly different.

They are phasing out support for Windows 7 in about 3 years which is why the updates are causing problems for people now apparently.
