Exchange and Completion date

We have been in the process of buying a house and we are running out of time with the mortgage in principle which has been extended already. We should hopefully have an Exchange date next week but need to have completed in the next 20 days.

What is the best thing to do with the broadband etc as it says best to give 3 weeks but we will probably have a week. Has anyone had similar and they have moved it in a week?. As I need this for my work.

  • I've pre-empted ours slightly, signed up with BT with completion planned for next week but have chosen a date closer to the end of the month in case it got bumped back. There were a handful of slots available within 10 working days but not many (North East).

Not sure if you'll be able to change the date that easily with other suppliers, but BT seems to let you pick and choose different appointments online, and change if it required.

Are people currently living in the house you are buying?

If so, you should be very careful about what you do before exchange/completion.

If/when your chosen provider needs to take over the line at the property, you might inadvertently cause whoever is living there now to lose their phone and internet service.

Good point, sorry I should have mentioned ours currently had/have Virgin Media and there hadn't been a BT line for years, so was a safe move.

As a stop gap (as I'd cancelled our home broadband at the end of the contract), I got an EE dongle for £20 up front and 16GB of data for £22 a month from PC World on a 30 day contract. Will start the process of cancelling that next week.

If you have a mortgage offer that expires in 20 days, them make sure your conveyancer knows this, and insist on Completion being agreed before then.
Or are you doing your own conveyancing?

Don't arrange BB, or anything else, until you Exchange.
  • I will leave it until we get exchange date before trying to switch it to new house .

Im guessing (and hoping) you have just got your terminology wrong and its your full mortgage offer you are talking about,

Have you considered a Pay-as-you-go 4G dongle for your laptop?

For £50 you can pick up a 12GB dongle that lasts 12 months, so depending on coverage where you are that would work as a short-term fix once you've moved in and would allow you to get online for essential work-related stuff while you place an order for a permanent broadband line.

Because your purchase may fall through! I hope you can cancel your deal if necessary! Nothing is certain until exchange. Unfortunately it's more common than you think. I've known several people lose houses just before exchange, and there have been many tales on here.
