Tagging mp3 files so that they play in correct order - advice anyone?

Options
Hi,

Bought myself a Buffalo Linkstation on ebay which is working fine except that my Pure Sensia 200D radio sorts the album tracks into alphabetical order instead of how they should be on original album.

I've heard it's possible to re-tag the files with numbers in front so that they play in the correct order but am having trouble working out how to do it. It seems that the player is sorting the tracks by 'Title' and not by 'Filename' as the filenames already have the leading numbers included. No options on the radio for sorting by whichever field. I also have Plex and Serviio running on other PC's in the house but audio streamed from these is sorted correctly without me having to do anything special.

Can I install and run a different media server on a NAS like this? It is quite an old model so am guessing not and it's got quite specific firmware from Buffalo.

Does anyone have any idea how I can add numbers to the 'Title' tag, preferably in a batch process where I don'r have to access each track in a folder seperately?

Any advice appreciated. Sorry for the long post

In the past I've used the Mp3tag metadata editor to do this:

As above, check that your MP3 tag info is not empty.

A good alternate to MP3tag is KID3, this works much better with Discogs IMO.

Regards the linkstation, model number please ?

I take it you are running the latest firmware for your Pure Sensa 200D connect ?

    Again, mp3tag. Free download.

Open up the files within this (usually best to work with an album's worth at a time) and complete the 'Track Number' field. This assumes that the playback machine will read these numbers first, in preference to looking at the Track Name or Filename.

If setting the Track Number doesn't work, you'll have to edit each Filename one by one. In most cases, though, you shouldn't have to

Hi, thanks for the reply. Will try KID3 and see how I go. Yes, my radio is running the latest firmware (but will double-check)

    Hi, thanks for the reply
I didn't know you could edit a field called 'Track Number' so will have a look to see if I can. Each Filename has the track numbers attached and are used by Plex and Serviio. The Buffalo appears to sort them by 'Title' of the track in alphabetical order and ignores the 'Filename' field.

The model number of the NAS is HS-DH500GL and yes, it is quite old :)

Thanks for all the replies so far

What are you using to get the music onto the NAS?

I've just looked at mp3tag, and it's not Track Number, it's just headed Track

Just copying and pasting from Windows 7 at the moment and editing the tags from the folder on the NAS

1-4aRen (from http://www.1-4a.com/rename/) is great for renaming files. The advanced interface isn't always obvious, but it's very powerful and free.

How are you getting the music onto the Win 7 PC? Ripping it from CD? Download?

If ripping from CD, what software?

My music is all downloaded stuff which is assumed to be tagged correctly as they come from legit sources.

In a further twist, I connected an old Magicbox streamer/radio to the NAS via wifi and this shows the tracks in the correct order. This box comes from around the same era as the NAS and looks for UPnP sources rather than DNLA. I understand they are derivitives of the same standard effectively, but what happened to the way newer streamers sort their tracks?
