Good Sat Nav apps? (Worried about data usage)

I've got an iPhone 4s and we're going on a short break soon, but still in the U.K. I'm completely new to smartphones and I'm clueless about data use and costs. I'm on a pay as you go plan and data costs 2p/mb.
We'll be travelling about each day, sometimes on long journeys and need a sat nav. I have a tomtom but it would be handy if I could use my phone instead. I know I can use Apple maps but I've heard it can cost a fortune in data if it's on even for a couple of hours. Are there any good apps that don't use data and are free to use?

That one seems quite city based. We'll be travelling all over rural Yorkshire so I'm not sure if it would work.
Does downloading mean it would use up storage on my phone? Would it still read out directions as we're driving?
Sorry for what I'm sure are stupid questions but I'm really clueless about this!0 -

There are some that don't use mobile data, there's here wego (linked to in post #2) and I know on Android you can download Google Maps before you go.0

^^ +1 for the google maps if your phone is an android.
You can download the required maps over wifi before you leave.
Edit, just re-read and your phone is an Iphone ..
You can still get google maps ..

But i dont know if you can still download the maps in advance0 -
I downloaded the U.K. Map from Here WeGo and it does have all the rural areas too. Thanks for the tip. I'm sure you've saved me a fortune in data costs

I got the TomTom app.
Saved me buying a Sat Nav since i always have my phone with me. No data usage.0 -
I couldn't find a tomtom app in the App Store. It only seems to have tomtom mydrive and mysport and those aren't any use.0

Navmii and Sygic are both free to download and no data usage, unless you want all the live traffic connectivity.0

It's part of 'Here Maps' which was bought by a car manufacturing consortium including, Audi, BMW, and Daimler, from Nokia.
