Big (but small) sofa

We desperately need a new sofa, ideally a 3-seater, but one that will fit through our small front door and hallway. Either that or is it possible to buy a sofa that you build indoors, good quality and long lasting obviously.
Basically I don't know where to start
or what my options are.
We've currently got a 2-seater which wouldn't fit through the front door, relatives had to cart it through the school next door then over the back wall, through our tiny kitchen and they still had to saw one of the legs off! It's not possible to go through the school now as they've put up very high railings.
Thanks for your help!

I have a big three seater from House of Fraser. You can get inside it and unscrew the arms which leaves you with just an L shape which is easier to hump about.
I have a living room on the first floor and we had big issues trying to get our other one upstairs so that lives downstairs now. Luckily a friend was getting rid of this perfectly good one! (I say perfectly good - not after my kids and DH have been on it
) Dirty little monkeys all three of them! Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

i know someone in the NW who sells leather sofas that come in a box!
the backs fit on with hidden bolts. very good for getting into tight doors/hallways/staircases etc.
good prices too.
let me know if you need a contact number.Get some gorm.0 -
There are a few companies that can make sofas with detachable arms, or with base bits that attach by fixing plates. My sister had a similar problem in a flat. I saw the 'sofa in a box' on ebay when she was looking, it didn't look that good, but was not necessarily the same company that ormus is talking about. I think she found one in John Lewis, but do try google as there are other options.0

The other option is a futon, although I know they're not to everyones taste.
The good thing is that they come as a pile of wood & an extremely heavy mattress. You get the fun (I use this term loosely of course) of making the base so there's no issue with getting it in. We had a couple of them given to us & they lasted far beyond our expectations (always the way isn't it? ) & we ended up passing them on again after about 8 years.
Argos do various styles. I think one of ours came from a shop called Dreams, the other was from an independant shop.0 -
We had this problem. We found a sofa that split in half (John Peters). and you screwed it back together. We also considered 1 from Ikea as that you built yourself. We also went to DFS who gave us a few options that we could have the split in half then screw together, but it was extra money to do this.0

Another option would be to remove the window glass in your sitting room if it is big enough.0

Thanks guys, I didn't know you could buy sofas with detachable bits or ones that split in half... I have a better idea what to look for now!0

KLB, You may want to try a company called Hilton and Bromley in Stockport they made a corner unit for us and they where very good, maybe worth a quick look on google?.

Modular sofas would also solve your problem -this is one I considered (until i found something I liked more!)
http://www.slotfurniture.com/
but a search on modualr sofa on google brings up loads.
Another option is something like this...http://www.dfsonline.co.uk/product.php?product=2110&cat=160&offset=18&ret_page=cat_product_list.php
It is 5 1mx1m cubes so fits almost anywhere....
Hope this helps a bit
