Temporary insurance?

My car insurance is due for renewal on October 9th.
I am getting a new car around October 30th, so was wondering how to handle the insurance renewal.
I looked into temporary insurance for a month or so, but the prices were quite high.
Is it worth getting a year's insurance on the old car, and then switching to the new one?

Try and ensure whoever you renew with will be happy to cover your new car and just change cars over.
Expect an admin charge for making the mid term change0 -
If you use direct line they don't charge an adjustment fee. I recently bought a new car and swapped the cover over around three weeks after inception. I got a rebate of about £40 (original annual policy was only £300).
They then covered my old car at the same time on temporary insurance for two weeks for £30 while I sold it. It sold after a week, I called them up and they gave me half that 30 quid back.
I ended up with £25 overall back in my pocket and half a tree in cover notes and letters in my post. I really couldn't fault them.0 -
Make sure you check the price of the insurance for the new car if your planning to switch over. A low price insurer for the old car may not mean a low price for the new car!0
