I tried at 5.30am today again...........try again later is the message....again and again and again for the past few days now. So can online savers use there nearest branch?0

Yes, apart from yesterday afternoon, when it was impossible to get through, on every other occasion today, I have got through, and I tested it a few times just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. :T It can't be just luck, can it?0

In a word, no!0 -
I got through to my online a/c on first attempt this morning (about 5.45 am).
Maybe I was lucky like hansi ?0 -
At 7.45am was getting the busy message. Sat on myPC continuously clicking to try and get access.
People here are complaining that they cannot gain access and this is the reason, I imagine that the NR website was not equipped to cope with 1000's of savers all panicking to get on line at the same time!

Got through after about 20 tries in past day. It was very quick once I'd reached the point where you put in customer number.
I had originally only wanted to withdraw a small sum to pay a bill, but had got so concerned by the complete lack of information/reassurances on the website that in the end I took out most of it.0 -
True. But you can sign up to a fixed rate now, and then if rates go down before your mortgage comes up for renewal just cancel the application and sort out a new one. If you add the booking fee on to the loan then you may not have anything to pay if you cancel the application later (this works with Abbey mortgages, not sure about other lenders).MarkyMarkD wrote: »By selecting your fixed rate product now, as well as locking in today's rates, you also lock in today's end dates and effectively lose a few months of fixed rate.0 -
A couple with a million pounds in an online account barricaded a branch manager into her office when they were told this. The matter was resolved after the police turned up!In a word, no!
More here and a rational assessment here.
I don't think the panic is justified but it's easy for me to be relaxed as I'm not a Northern Rock customer.0 -
I had no problem getting through on the online site yesterday morning. Drew out all but £200. Checked the site last night, it was down, but it's up and running again now.
Yes, I tried yesterday around 10.0am and it was very sluggish loading, eventually it told me to try later, in fact I tried again straight away and it loaded as normal :rotfl:
Have been happy enough with NR as it was a site I got used to, but have had gnawing doubts for some time that I could get a better rate of interest elsewhere, this has been the shove I needed to get on with it, also to spread my savings around various Companies.
I still have in excess of 12k with NR and undecided where to put it.if i had known then what i know now0 -
Well, I'd love to be a member of Northern Rock's Remuneration Committee as it ponders how best to abide by its own brief:
In carrying out its duties under these terms of reference, the Committee should have regard to the terms of the Combined Code which provide that the Committee should:
* provide the packages needed to attract, retain and motivate Executive Directors of the quality required, but should avoid paying more than is necessary for this purpose
* ensure that the performance-related elements of remuneration form a significant proportion of the total remuneration package of Executive Directors and are designed to align their interest with those of shareholders and to give these Directors keen incentives to perform at the highest levels
All those concerned in the running of a business which can only borrow from elsewhere to fund its own mortgage lending, yet which embarked on a massive expansion of lending regardless of the growing anxiety in the capital markets, certainly needs the performance-related elements of their remuneration given the closest examination.
