electricity kw usage
hi everybody:j
i have been reading these forums for a year or two now and i find it facinating.I have succesfully won all bank charges back from three banks, thanks
I now have my first question i am having lots of problems with my gas and electric my main question for now is how many kwh of electric does the average hosehold use i have found some info saying 3300 is that right?
I have a 3 bedroom house with prepayment meter i currently use about £28 per week which i know is alot but i have took all the meter readings for the week and disscussed them with british gas and he says this is a normal usage for a 3 bed house two adults two kids, which i accepted but recently i went on holiday for ten days i turned all appliences of apart from
1 x pond pump
1 x fridge
1x chest freezer
i used 15 pound in those ten days ! this just doesnot seem right!
i have just recieved a letter from british gas saying i have used 6820 kwh since jan 1st can this be right?
i think i will swap to a pay monthly meter soon
any help or advise would be great .
thanx gary

Welcome to the forum.
I assume you do not heat your house or hot water with electricity?(I know you have gas)
Old/faulty fridges and freezers can use a lot of electricity.
6,620kWh in eight and a half months is very high but perfectly possible.
Changing to a monthly payment(direct Debit) on a credit meter will not reduce your consumption; but it will be a lot cheaper.0 -
yes i heat my water with gas which is another nightmare story at the moment i'm fighting for a £750 refund from previose tennant(5 years ago)
i have a old chest freezer that may be a electric guzzler but every other aplience ,ie washing machine, tumble dryer and frigde is about one year old and all top energy saving rating A
i'm glad to hear about billing will be cheaper i think that will be done very soon
thanx for your opinion.0 -
The other thing to look at is your pond pump. The wattage of these varies a great deal from 10w to 200w. Do you know the wattage and how long it is on each day?0

i have 2 x 200 w pumps and they are on 24 hours a day do you think that could be the problem ?
i have also just found the booster switch on my chest freezer might have been on it doesn't say quick freeze or anything but when i turn it off the freezer seems to stay on which makes me think it might be a booster switch.0 -
'I'm as mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it....for much longer!'0

Your 2 pumps are costing approx £1 a day(50p each). Which will account for two thirds of the £15 used on your 10 day holiday.
So from 01 Jan until today your pumps will have consumed approx 2,400kWh
Presumably they are for Koi? If so I won't tell your wife!0 -
i will have to tell her its the tv and the tumble dryer we will have to cut back . ;O)0

Hi Daddyeo, well my usage for electricity is 4500 KWH, and am in a 3 bedroom house too. So, whats your secret. Read my post that I put on earlier please, about renewing deals with utility companies.
Thanks:rolleyes:0 -
Have only just seen this post, so when reading the list and saw pond pump!!!! then two!!!!, similar to leaving a 1KW fire on for 10 hours a day every day, in the garden.
Well everyman must have his hobby.;)
