Moving Home Phone Line

I was just wondering what happens in regards to the phone when I move into my first home. I am a first time buyer and a bit clueless. Is there no line in the property or does the provider for the old occupants carry over.
Also I never use a home phone anymore and I was just wondering do I need a phone line in the property to get broadband? Im sure these are all questions that would be asked all the time but I'm a bit lost with it all.
Thanks

You don't need a phone line as such to get broadband but your options will be limited to broadband over the mobile phone network which can be a) patchy and b) slow.
If its speed you want, going down the landline will be the easiest way to get it. You don't have to use the telephone if you don't want to.
Virgin do do an option for broadband only but its cheaper to have a telephone line and broadband down it.0
