Pontefract Area Knowledge Help Please

Hi Everyone

Wondered if anyone can help please?

Currently living in the South West (due to husbands work) but we are wanting to buy and settle in Yorkshire (closer to where I'm from originally).

I've narrowed down my search I think to the Pontefract area, where it seems you get a lot more for your money, than my home town of York, and decent commuting distance to Leeds.

The problem is that I'm looking at areas to buy, where I have no local knowledge...I'm scared that the houses that look good on paper, aren't in the best of areas.

I have my Mum and Dad on standby for viewings. I currently have 6 properties on my saved list that I like the look of.

Most of the houses I have seen are in the vicinity of Monkhill station, and one is South Pontefract.

Can anyone help please?

  • Originally from Castleford myself. For a decent commute to Leeds to suggest Methley (Part of Leeds but just outside of Castleford)
Three Lane Ends, Whitwood, Custyke - ALl in Castleford but good for commuting to Leeds.
Monkhill has had a lot of money put into it recently, lots of new build houses. It's a very hilly area.
Normanton may also be an option

The south of Pontefract is generally regarded as the best area. Monkhill was a bit of a dump but it is some time since I was last in that area. Is the commute by road or train? Can you give us some street names or rightmove links of the candidate houses?
  • Thanks for your replies.
    There's a few I'm looking at:
    Holgate Road
    Willow bank Drive
    Hazel Grove
    Stump cross Lane

Re the commuting - I've no job as yet - bit would be looking at possibly Leeds and commuting either by car or train

Holgate Road - I used to live in Castlesyke View, a few streets away from Holgate Road. Nice area, no problems that I ever noticed.

Willowbank Drive and Hazel Grove - Relatively new build in the Monkhill area. Don't know much about this area.

Stumpcross Lane - Again, relatively new with some houses still being built. On the outer edges of Pontefract. The main road at the bottom does get very busy in peak times. Knottingley Station is a short distance away, left turn onto main road, with direct trains to Leeds.
  • The Holgate one was one of my favourites, so that's good news.

My Mum and Dad are viewing a few in Knottingley for me this weekend (bit apprehensive of that area) but will see what they say and then see if they'll go see a few in Pontefract for me.

    Thanks again

    I wouldn't live in Knottingley.
  • That's the same feeling I'm getting too now. Wish I'd looked at Pontefract first tbh and not bothered with there.
  • Knottingley is a lovely area. It needs some TLC but overall a quiet area, with a thriving community.
  • All hope is not lost then! I've looked on Googlemaps and the surrounding areas look nice.

Mainly looking at one on Hollingworth Lane and The Wharf.
  • I fyou're certain on commuting to Leeds definatly look at Methley. There is a direct bus into Leeds through the village every 20 mins or so
