Amazon cloud... no longer free

Amazon cloud used to give us tiered storage, where the lower tier was free. I got and email this morning telling me that the tiers were being removed, the text is below. The deal seems to be:
3 months free trial then £55 a year or free as part of amazon prime.
....'...............
Amazon now offers an unlimited online storage plan in place of our prior plans, which offered tiered levels of storage. Our new Unlimited Storage plan lets you store as many videos, photos, documents, and other files as you like.
What happens to my current plan?
The new unlimited plans have replaced all previous storage plans, including the free 5 GB plan. All of your stored photos, videos, and files are still accessible in Amazon Drive, but you will need to start a three-month free trial of the Unlimited Storage plan to upload more files to your account.

Yep. Amazon have decided they would rather leave "free storage" to others to fight over.0

I don't think the 'Unlimited Storage' is free with Amazon Prime. You do get unlimited photo storage with it but if you want to store other items as well Prime Members have to pay the £55 like everybody else.0

If like me you no longer use any of the storage on Amazon drive there seems to be no way of closing the drive account without starting the free trial and giving them your card details. When I clicked on the start free trial all of my card details where already stored (I assume from my Amazon account). This worries me as I have seen how many people where still charged for prime services after they cancelled the free trial. I have emailed them and explained that I want to close my drive account and if the only way to do that is to close my main Amazon account then so be it.0

Presumably this also includes storing all of your Kindle books (I'm talking about the ones that are legally free
). Presumably with 'Send to Kindle' you will still be able to send the book to a particular device, but not be able to store a copy of the document on the cloud in order to sync between devices?
Edit: I am now fairly sure that this will not affect uploading docs for kindle at all. The same happened in the USA last year

Hi, you could just clear your stuff out and leave it empty. They'll eventually delete it for you?
The costs seem to be associated with adding more items in, not with anything that's already there. It's possible to carry on using free storage as long as it's for items you already have in the cloud0 -
If you already have a drive then log in to it.
Select "Manage Storage"
Then look for the link saying "Do Not Continue" (usually next to your current subscription option).Laters
